Tenant Data: California AB 802

California state legislature already requires benchmarking of building utility consumption, and recently passed a new bill providing building owners legal authority to collect and benchmark utility data on behalf of tenants. Prior to California’s AB 802, building owners were required to have each tenant individually sign a release allowing access to their utility data.

Assembly Bill 802 allows building owners access to whole building consumption data without approaching each tenant independently. Instead, owners of large commercial buildings will have the option to request utility data directly from utility providers bypassing tenant roadblocks and simplifying the processes of whole building energy benchmarking.
